Money & Costs
Morocco is generally good value, but travel costs can vary a lot depending on your style and destination. Local food, trains and basic accommodation can be very affordable, while boutique riads, private drivers, upscale dining and luxury hotels – especially in Marrakech – can raise your budget quickly. In daily life, Morocco works best with a mix of cash and card, as cash is still important for taxis, tips, small shops and many everyday purchases.

Currency & Exchange Offices
Morocco uses the Moroccan dirham (MAD). As a rough guide, 100 MAD is about 10-11 USD, although exchange rates can change over time.
Exchange offices are common in airports, city centers and tourist areas. They are useful if you arrive with euros, dollars or pounds in cash. A practical approach is to exchange only a small amount on arrival for immediate expenses, then compare rates and change more later if needed.
ATMs are easy to find in cities and major tourist destinations, and they are often the simplest way to get dirhams. Cards are widely accepted in hotels, many restaurants, supermarkets and modern shops, but not everywhere.
Cash is still important in Morocco. You will often need it for taxis, souks, tips, small cafés, small shops and many rural or less touristy areas. Carrying small bills and coins makes everyday spending much easier.

Tipping
Tipping is common in Morocco, especially in tourism and service-related situations. It does not need to be excessive, but it should be expected in many everyday interactions.
Useful guidelines:
-Cafés: 2-5 MAD / 0.20-0.50 USD
-Small local restaurants: 5-10 MAD / 0.50-1 USD
-Tourist restaurants: around 5-10% if service was good
-Porters: 10-20 MAD / 1-2 USD per bag
-Housekeeping: 10-30 MAD / 1-3 USD per day
-Taxis: usually round up, or add 5-10 MAD / 0.50-1 USD
-Guides and drivers: 20-100+ MAD / 2-11+ USD depending on service and duration
A good rule is to tip fairly, not dramatically. Small amounts are normal, and consistency matters more than showing off.
Budget by travel style
Morocco can be very affordable at the budget and mid-range levels, but luxury travel – especially in Marrakech – gets expensive quickly.

Common money mistakes to avoid
- Relying only on cards
- Not carrying small bills
- Exchanging too much money at the airport
- Assuming all of Morocco is cheap
- Forgetting to budget for tips
- Using private drivers for every journey without checking cheaper alternatives first
Money-saving tips
Use exchange offices in town for larger exchanges instead of changing everything at the airport.
Keep cash for small purchases and use card where acceptance is good.
Eat regularly in simple local restaurants instead of only in polished tourist venues.
Use trains and buses on practical routes rather than defaulting to private transfers.
Compare accommodation carefully, as a cheaper stay far from where you want to be can create extra taxi costs.
Book popular riads early in high season, especially in major tourist destinations.
